SUMMARY:Comparing the Influence of Particulate Matter Sources on Communities in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region Using Ambient PM2.5/PM10 Ratio Profiles
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to the first CPANS Edmonton luncheon of 2025! Join us for an insightful presentation exploring particulate matter sources and their influence on communities in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR). This event promises to provide valuable information on air quality management and the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in the region. \nPresenters: Danlin Su\, and David Spink \nAbout the presentation: \nSurface oil sands mining operations in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) are major contributors to particulate matter (PM) emissions. In addition to fine PM\, predominantly emitted by stationary combustion sources and mine fleet\, coarse PM (i.e.\, fugitive dust) and its associated nuisance and potential health impacts are a concern for Indigenous communities. This presentation will cover PM2.5/PM10 ratio profiles determined using ambient data collected at various air monitoring stations across the AOSR. It will also analyze the factors influencing PM2.5/PM10 ratios observed in different communities. \nAbout the Presenters: \nDanlin Su is an environmental engineer and independent consultant. She has worked in various civil and environmental engineering roles in both the public and private sectors. Currently\, she focuses on supporting Indigenous communities in Alberta affected by oil sands and industrial developments on air quality management issues. \nDavid Spink is an environmental engineer who has extensive experience in air quality and management. He worked with Environment Canada and Alberta Environment before transitioning to a career as a consultant. For the past 20 years\, David has specialized in air quality management related to oil sands development\, primarily working with First Nations and Métis communities. \nWhen: \nJanuary 22nd\, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm \nVenue: \nUniversity Club\, University of Alberta\n11435 Saskatchewan Drive\, Edmonton\, Alberta\, T6G 2G9 \nThe U of A campus is accessible via light rail transit and bus.
