DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, December 7th. Please register by end of Friday\, December 2nd! \nThis presentation will focus on the testing aspects of Sections 69 to 90 of Part 2 of the MSAPR (Stationary Spark-Ignition Engines).  Topics will include\, the different methods and benefits of each; dealing with difficult sampling locations and possible solutions. The estimated time requirements and engine process data details will also be discussed. \nPresenter: Kirk Easto\, RWDI Field Services Lead \nKirk Easto has been with RWDI since 1999 and is the team leader for RWDI’s field group\, responsible for the technical development and strategic growth and direction of the group. His duties at RWDI include: the design of air quality and source testing studies\, installing\, commissioning and calibrating air quality\, meteorological and data acquisition equipment\, and coordinating services for implementation of field studies. He has managed projects involving ventilation and control systems\, source testing/CEM instrumentation\, ambient air quality\, boiler optimization\, odour testing and evaluation.  Kirk has a strong knowledge in a wide range of industries and associated air handling and pollution control equipment\, and has performed source testing all over Canada\, throughout the USA\, South America\, and the Middle East. SUMMARY:Edmonton December Luncheon: Primary Heavy Oil and Oil Sands – Still Venting After All These Years
DESCRIPTION:CPANS is pleased to announce the December Edmonton Luncheon Topic – Heavy Oil and Oil Sands\, Still Venting After All These Years. \nIn 2000\, the Alberta Government\, due to rising prices for natural gas\, began to require measurement and capture of methane being vented from heavy oil and primary (cold produced) oil sands wells. Saskatchewan tended to follow Alberta’s lead\, although results are harder to track.  While this had some initial impact on total vented volumes in the province (mainly due to better economics with high gas prices)\, and there has been some reduction in venting intensity per barrel\, there are still systemic issues which result in over 4-5 MtCO2eq/yr of GHG emissions from venting produced solution gas from these types of wells in Alberta.  The GHG emissions are considered a global issue and unnecessary venting reduces the industry’s credibility as environmental stewards\, however\, a greater potential loss is the loss of a valuable local energy source which could be used to increase heavy oil recovery in those same regions. \nThis presentation will discuss how primary heavy oil/oil sands has changed over the last 15 years and how those changes should have greatly reduced methane venting from production operations. Examples will be covered of some areas where operations in some township are emitting over 5 million m3/yr of natural gas vs. other areas with low vent emissions\, and highlight the differences in the properties of those resources\, the differences in well configurations and the attitudes of the producers which motivate conservation. \nPresenter: Bruce Peachey\, FEIC\, FCIC\, P.Eng.\, President of New Paradigm Engineering Ltd\, in Edmonton \nBruce has over 35 years experience in the upstream oil and gas industry. BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. He spent 16 years with Imperial Oil including testing and commercial implementation of vent gas compression for Cold Lake 1981-85. Bruce formed New Paradigm in 1991 to address chronic problems in the oil and gas industry. He is a founding member of Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) and instructor at U of A “Oil and Gas Property Evaluation” to 4th year Petroleum Engineering and “Environmental Stewardship – Energy\, Carbon and Water” for the Faculty of Extension. We encourage everyone to arrive around 6:00 pm as the presentation starts at 6:30 pm sharp. \nTopic: AER’s role in the development of a methane reduction regulatory framework \nPresenter: Maria Lavelle\, Climate Lead\, Regulatory Development\, Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) \nMaria has 20 years of experience in policy and regulatory development. She has a J.D. and an LL.M. and has completed her post-graduate education in natural resources\, energy and environmental law along with professional programs in regulatory design and development. At AER\, Maria is the Climate Lead Regulatory – Development for the Climate Policy Assurance Team where she leads\, and is accountable for\, regulatory development processes related to methane reduction. This includes assuring the design of regulatory approaches and instruments subscribes to a high standard of regulatory excellence\, and that they are legally and economically viable. \nBefore joining the Climate Policy Assurance Team\, Maria was a senior regulatory analyst with the AER where she led regulatory development in a number of projects\, including: determining the regulatory approach that would best reduce the number of pipeline incidents; the governance and regulatory framework that would best monitor air quality in the Peace River Area\, and as part of the NALA Process Team – envisaging the future regulatory process for a single\, integrated approval across the lifecycle of an energy development project. \nPrior to joining the AER\, Maria was a legal counsel with the Alberta Law Reform Institute where she led and/or contributed to a number of major legislative reform projects that resulted in new legislation being introduced in the province of Alberta. Howaida was born and raised in Toronto and has lived in Edmonton for 14 years. In the last few years\, the regulations have been changing and more big changes are around the corner. Also\, new technologies are being developed to mitigate benzene emissions in these facilities. DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, September 14th. Please register by end of Friday\, September 9th! \nPresenter: Dr. Brian Zelt\, P.Eng\, President at Zelt PSI\nDr. Brian Zelt is a mechanical engineer and an independent consultant with over 25 years of experience in air dispersion modelling. Brian works in the fields of air dispersion modelling\, public safety risk assessment and application programming. He is a co-author in the development of AERflare-incin\, ABflare and AERH2S spreadsheet based dispersion models\, as well as Shelter/Exposures for H2S well blow-out dispersion and toxic load air quality dispersion models. \nThe ABflare source and air dispersion modelling assistance tool (Improved Flare Source Parameters for CALPUFF and AERMOD Dispersion Models\, AUPRF Project 912951) was created in 2010. The AERflare-incin tool has evolved based upon the initial efforts of PSAQM (Public Safety and Air Quality Management Inc\, M.Zelensky). The tools are necessary to comply with Non-Routine Dispersion Modelling guidance and recommended practices for the AER (Alberta Energy Regulator). The methods in AERflare-incin have also been adopted for flare modelling by AEP (Alberta Environment and Parks). These tools function in conjunction with MS Excel (which updates annually)\, U.S.A. EPA AERMOD program (which updates adhoc)\, CALPUFF distributed by SRC (which updates adhoc) and scientific advances. As such\, the tools require regular updates to reflect these factors as well as functionality bugs.\nThe presentation by Brian Zelt (Zelt PSI) will introduce the latest features of the ABflare and AERflare-incin tools\, the proposed distribution and update methods\, as well as provide an opportunity for feedback. SUMMARY:Edmonton September Luncheon: The Challenge of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:CPANS is pleased to announce the start of the Edmonton luncheon series for the 2016-2017 season. This year we will have eight speakers and the theme of this season’s Edmonton Luncheon series is “Climate Change Impacts and Threats”. \nSeptember Luncheon Topic – The Challenge of Climate Change for Built Environments: Identifying Climate Change Risks and the Need for Resilience Planning \nFriday\, September 09\, 2016\nClimate change means Alberta will experience shifts in both the climate ranges and extreme events that define the operating environment for the design\, operations and maintenance activities for critical public infrastructure and the built environment. Designs for our infrastructure investments will need to operate safely and reliably under these emerging shifts\, and will need to cope with increasingly frequent and higher intensity extreme events resulting from climate change. That can only happen if infrastructure is designed with an understanding of climate-induced impacts and taking proactive measures to reduce impacts from emerging climate risks. \nJoin us for a discussion on the challenge of climate change for engineers and asset managers. We’ll cover how climate-induced risks translate from the natural operating environment to infrastructure impacts\, the multiple motivators for design professionals to manage these climate risks\, and an overview of Best Practices to assess and manage climate induced risks to the built environment. \nPresenter: Roger Rempel\, P. Eng. FEC\, IRP\, Senior Environmental Engineer\, WSP Canada\nRoger is an environmental engineer with over 20 years of experience in environmental assessment\, climate change vulnerability assessment\, quantitative risk assessment\, environmental systems modeling and public consultation.\nRoger has conducted climate change impact assessments and served as technical advisor to a number of multi-disciplinary study teams assessing public infrastructure and related components for vulnerability to climate change impacts and extreme events. He conducted climate change impact workshops for Canadian impact assessors to define climate data requirements for modelling practitioners within Canada’s Prairie Regional Adaptation Collaborative (PRAC)\, and has conducted scoping assessments and pilot applications of new climate change impact assessment tools for municipal planning\, water demand forecasting and extreme runoff management. \nRoger is an instructor for Engineers Canada’s PIEVC Protocol\, conducting workshops to engineers and climate agencies on how to apply the PIEVC Protocol\, and has taught these workshops throughout Canada\, and internationally in the United States\, Brazil\, Costa Rica\, St. Lucia and Honduras. Roger’s work in engineering assessment of critical infrastructure for impacts related to climate change has been conducted in Canada\, the U.S.A.\, the Caribbean and Central America. \nIn June of 2016\, Roger became one of the first six Professional Engineers in Canada to achieve Engineers Canada’s new Infrastructure Resiliency Professional certification. \nAbout the Luncheon\nThe luncheon is scheduled for Friday\, September 09 2016.
