He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in 2005 and trained as a post-doctoral scholar at the Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex (UK) until 2010. In 2011\, he opened his own laboratory at the University of Calgary’s School of Medicine. The categorization of the level of toxicity associated with ethylene oxide has been the subject of recent review from both the EPA and individual state governments due to its latest reclassification to a known human carcinogen. In this presentation\, we will be discussing the potential and recent rulings regarding this chemical in the US and Canada\, its associated health effects\, issues caused by this pollutant\, as well as the future of permitting ethylene oxide in Texas and Canada. \nPresenter:\nRawan El-Afifi is an environmental engineer working in the air quality group in Houston\, Texas. Rawan holds a MSc degree in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Tech\, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been with AECOM for 2 years\, and her experience includes air quality permitting and air dispersion modeling. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Low Cost PM Sensor Program\nSpeaker:  Corrine Schiller\nOctober 21st\, 2020 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm\nThe link to the talk is HERE\nClick the above link at noon on October 21st and we will be there!\nPlease forward this email to anyone that might be interested. \nTopic:\nWith the increase in the smoke from forest fires impacting communities\, citizen science and low-cost PM sensors are becoming more important.  Low-cost PM sensors have the accuracy to measure to ~+/- 1 AQHI unit which is what is required for information for individuals with respiratory issues such as asthma.  The information from these sensors can be used to inform people when physical activity should be restricted or not.  With more information available\, people can make more informed decisions.   I will discuss the pilot project that we have launched to utilize low cost sensors to inform people about air quality during these events.  This will include the calibration corrections\, intercomparisons\, strengths and weaknesses of the current technology.  In addition I will discuss who we are currently working with and where we see this project going in the future. \nPresenter:\nCorinne received her PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry in 1994 and has worked in the area of Air Quality for 30+ years.  Corinne is a Senior Air Quality Scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada.  She has worked in this position for the past 11 years. These initiatives  include   the following areas: 1) low wind speed conditions\, 2) building downwash\, 3) dispersion from  overwater sources\, 4) NO2 modeling issues\, 5) source characterization / plume rise issues\, and 6) treatment of the plume behavior in convective conditions. \nThis presentation will address comments received and ongoing further progress in these areas in mid-2020. \nPresenters: \nBob Paine is an associate Vice President in the air quality services group within AECOM’s environment group. He  is responsible for the strategic business and research direction in the areas of air quality at AECOM and leads  AECOM’s Air Quality Modeling Center of Excellence. The answer is digital! \nSince January 2015 the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has allowed the use of electronic Alberta Oilfield Waste Form to meet the requirement of full cycle tracking of hazardous waste. Most energy companies still use paper-based forms and antiquated databases or manual systems to track their hazardous waste\, despite the inherent risks associated with data integrity and data loss\, duplication of effort between field personnel and Environmental Co-ordinators and poor visibility of the information. Forestry after receiving a 1 year scholarship at University of Chicago. He immigrated to Canada in 1989 and enrolled in an M.Sc. program at the University of Toronto. He received a Canadian M.Sc. (Forestry) in 1991. He then held several positions with the BC Ministry of Forests. Lured by Oil and Gas prosperity Kris joined Husky Energy in 2007 in the Emergency Response and Upstream Environment Groups. In 2011 Kris was nominated as Chair of the European Environmental Agency – UNESCO Heritage Sites program. At that point he shared his time between Calgary and Brussels. This project led Kris to his Doctorate degree in Ecology and Public Policy in 2014. \nKris has over 30 years experience and has been involved in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The latest ESRI development of ArcGIS Online allowed Kris to build a Geospatial Comprehensive Emergency Response Information System. \nAbstract: \nArcGIS Online is a cloud-based mapping platform that is accessible from many different locations. Organizations can subscribe to the platform and use it to manage\, create\, store\, and access hosted services\, maps and applications. Green Space Services ArcGIS Online Comprehensive Emergency Management System reduces the cost and time it takes to deploy resources in case of an emergency. He is the is the Senior Air Quality Specialist for the Red Deer North Saskatchewan region. In his time with the department he has contributed to the understanding and management of fine particulate matter in the region through the Capital Region and Red Deer fine particulate matter responses. This work combines Maxwell’s experience in air quality research (e.g. M.Sc. University of Toronto\, Publications with Environment Canada) and interaction with stakeholders to implement and achieve effective air quality management in Alberta. \nAbstract: \nAlberta Environment and Parks used the CMAQ photochemical model to evaluate the contribution of various source sectors to ambient air quality across the Province of Alberta. The contribution of source sectors was evaluated using an improved emissions inventory\, complete calendar year of meteorology and across the whole province at the same time. Eng\, UV-DOX EnviroTek \n45 years of commitment by Reinhard Schuetz\, P. Eng.\, to Petroleum Industry engineering\, as well as passion for a cleaner environment\, culminated in the establishment of ‘UV-DOX EnviroTek’ and development of the UV-DOX Reactor (a pollution control device suitable for residential\, commercial\, industrial and agricultural installations to simultaneously combat germicidal and chemical contaminants). \nPrior involvements entailed being a Partner in a consulting engineering company\, a Director with the Alberta Biodiesel Association\, a Nominee for Entrepreneur of the Year and Founder of a tank fabrication company responsible for Dual-containment Heated Storage Tank and Condensing Unit design and patents. \nAbstract: \nThe presentation will address a newly developed multi-pass Environmental Protection Device (the UV-DOX Reactor) dealing with contamination reduction at the source.  Capable of simultaneously mitigating germicidal and chemical contamination\, the Reactor is suitable for residential\, commercial\, industrial and agricultural installations. \nToxic chemical emissions and germ-laden air circulation systems are common instigators of detrimental health and environmental issues.  Annual premature human deaths due to air pollution have been estimated at 7\,700 in Canada\, 200\,000 in the USA and a staggering 7 million globally. \nUVC light has a proven history of pungent air and germicidal reduction.  In addition to achieving superior odour and harmful organism destruction\, the UV-DOX Reactor (combining UVC light\, photo-catalytic coating and unique baffle system) is also capable of breaking chemical bonds of various VOC’s\, thereby effectively diminishing pollutants. He is the is the Senior Air Quality Specialist for the Red Deer North Saskatchewan region. In his time with the department he has contributed to the understanding and management of fine particulate matter in the region through the Capital Region and Red Deer fine particulate matter responses. This work combines Maxwell’s experience in air quality research (e.g. M.Sc. University of Toronto\, Publications with Environment Canada) and interaction with stakeholders to implement and achieve effective air quality management in Alberta. \nAbstract:\nAlberta Environment and Parks used the CMAQ photochemical model to evaluate the contribution of various source sectors to ambient air quality across the Province of Alberta. The contribution of source sectors was evaluated using an improved emissions inventory\, complete calendar year of meteorology and across the whole province at the same time. Please register by this Friday\, April 13! \nPresenter:  \nChristian Reuten\, Ph.D.\, ACM\, Technical Director / Associate\, RWDI AIR Inc.\n \nChristian’s technical work at RWDI includes climate-change assessments\, data analysis\, and numerical modelling and model evaluation.  He oversees RWDI’s Greenhouse Gas Verification Program and a broad client sector including government\, Indigenous people\, lawyers\, and academia.  Christian is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary.  His research interests comprise climate downscaling and the impact of regional climate change on glaciers\, air quality\, and tropical cyclones.  Christian was a reviewer of two IPCC Assessment Reports.  He is a CMOS Accredited Consultant in Meteorology and received a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of British Columbia. \nAbstract: \nLegal scrutiny of oil companies is growing in the United States.  By now\, at least nine U.S. cities have filed law suits against oil companies over climate change;  to-date\, none has succeeded.  On March 21\, Judge William Alsup\, presiding over two lawsuits by San Francisco and Oakland\, took an unprecedented approach:  Trying to establish a common understanding of the facts\, he had asked both sides to prepare a two-hour tutorial\, each\, to answer eight questions on climate science.  In this presentation\, I will walk you through those eight questions and provide the best available scientific answer – in less than an hour\, because I will not indulge in legal appeals. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, April 13 for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. Please register by this Friday\, February 23! \nPresenter:  \nBrad Gilmour\, Partner\, Head of Regulatory\, Bennett Jones\n \nBrad Gilmour is head of the regulatory department at Bennett Jones and co-head of the environmental department. His practice focuses primarily on environmental\, energy\, regulatory and aboriginal law. He has significant experience in facility approval applications associated with a broad range of energy\, natural resource\, chemical\, petrochemical\, hydro\, oil sands\, bio-fuel\, wind and other industry types. Brad appears before the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board\, the Alberta Energy Regulator\, the Alberta Utilities Commission\, the Natural Resources Conservation Board and the National Energy Board. Brad also regularly advises clients concerning regulatory compliance issues\, spills\, contaminated sites and environmental prosecutions. Before entering the practice of law\, he worked in Calgary as an environmental consultant conducting environmental liability assessments and site remediation programs. Brad writes and speaks on topics concerning environmental and regulatory law. As well\, he has taught courses on environmental law and occupational health and safety law for the University of Calgary\, Athabasca University\, and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. DESCRIPTION:CPANS is pleased to announce the January Edmonton Luncheon Topic: Carbon Competitiveness Incentive Regulation \nIntroducing Alberta’s New Industrial Carbon Pricing System.  On January 1st\, Alberta transitioned from the Specified Gas Emitters’ Regulation to a new system to price carbon emissions from larger industrial facilities\, as per committed in the Climate Leadership Plan. \nPresenter: Heather Carmichael is the Director of the Emissions Policy Unit in the Alberta Climate Change Office.  She has worked with the Government of Alberta for almost 10 years on a range of issues including oil sands environmental management\, energy efficiency\, public transparency and climate change.  Heather has been working on climate change mitigation policy since 2013. Please register by end of Friday\, December 8th! \nPresenters:  \nDebra Hopkins\, Environmental Health Team Lead\, Policy and Planning Division\, Alberta Environment and Parks \nDebra Hopkins is the Environmental Health Team Lead at Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) and has been working in the field of environmental public health for over 17 years. Since joining AEP\, she has been a strong advocate for the integration of human well-being\, cultural diversity and the social determinants of health into government policy and land use planning initiatives that support cumulative effects management. Currently her work includes applying natural and social scientific methodologies to evaluate potential impacts to human well-being. She is passionate about building community-based research approaches that respectfully reflect Indigenous and western knowledge systems. She has worked for Alberta Health\, Health Canada and started her path into the world of environmental health as a consultant with Intrinsic Environmental Sciences (formally Cantox Environmental) in Calgary. \nKaitlyn Wall\, Environmental Health Risk Assessment Modeller\, Policy and Planning Division\, Alberta Environment and Parks \nKaitlyn Wall has been with Alberta Environment and Parks for 4 years as an Environmental Health Risk Assessment Modeller. During her time with government she has had the opportunity to work on health risk assessments\, risk assessment modelling and spatial analysis\, health impact assessments\, quality of life assessments\, community based environmental health projects\, and health-based regulatory guideline development. \nTopic:\n \nBridging the Gap: Using a Quality of Life Approach to Integrate our Understanding of Health\, Social\, Environmental and Economic Impacts in the Oil Sands \nFor land use planning purposes\, a Quality of Life (QOL) approach was developed by the Alberta Government\, as part of a Regional Strategic Assessment\, to characterize human well-being in the face of existing and future oil sands development in the south Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta. This innovative approach delivered practical solutions using natural and social science methods to evaluate potential impacts to QOL\, with a focus on understanding health (e.g.\, well-being\, health risk) and its connection to our environment (air\, water\, biodiversity and land). The use of this approach as an integrative tool to describe the linkages between economic\, social and environmental influences represented a novel way of informing oil sands development planning and policy. Discussion of the QOL findings will show how new perspectives can be gained from the application of this approach on community level and regional scales\, integrating both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples’ perspectives. \n  \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, December 8th for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches.
