SUMMARY:First Virtual CPANS Luncheon - April 15\, 2020 at Noon (FREE)
DESCRIPTION:The first ever VIRTUAL CPANS LUNCHEON will be held on April 15\, 2020 at noon MST and is FREE! \nThe link to the talk is HERE.\nClick the above link at noon on April 15th and we will be there! \nAbstract:\n \nHow do we ensure Environmental Compliance in the wake of Covid-19\, when most of us are working from home and can’t rely on paper-based processes? The answer is digital! \nSince January 2015 the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has allowed the use of electronic Alberta Oilfield Waste Form to meet the requirement of full cycle tracking of hazardous waste. Most energy companies still use paper-based forms and antiquated databases or manual systems to track their hazardous waste\, despite the inherent risks associated with data integrity and data loss\, duplication of effort between field personnel and Environmental Co-ordinators and poor visibility of the information. Similarly\, Exploration & Production companies (E&Ps) are tracking water use through a combination of paper forms and spreadsheets\, making it extremely challenging to track compliance with the Temporary Diversion Licenses (TDLs) in accordance with Water Act. \nEnviroApps’ ez2Track solution automates tracking and reporting of hazardous waste and water usage\, increasing data accuracy and significantly reducing compliance effort. ez2Track is a cloud-based software Application (App) for field personnel that replaces paper and spreadsheet-based systems\, provides the much needed visibility and automatically generates the required reports for Regulatory Compliance. \nPresenters: \nAmit Bhargava: a co-founder of EnviroApps Inc.\, is a SME in the field of Environmental and Regulatory Compliance. Amit has more than 20 years of widely varied experience in a consulting and industry environment. He has a successful track record of designing and facilitating implementation of an Incident Management System and other software solutions to manage Regulatory Compliance for the Energy Industry utilizing an Environmental Management System approach. \nMayank Singh: also a co-founder of EnviroApps has more than 22 years of experience in the software sector. Mayank has delivered cutting edge solutions to clients like American Express\, Merrill Lynch\, State Street Bank and United Nations. Mayank was the architect of a pioneering product called eTeam\, one of the first versions of Intranets. When Mayank met Amit\, his high school class mate in Calgary after 25 years\, they decided to collaborate and utilize their acquired skill-set to solve some real world problems. \nRegistration and payment:\nNo need to register\nSee you at the luncheon!

SUMMARY:Calgary October Luncheon: Refining Air Quality by Redefining Pollution Control
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, October 24\, 2018. Please register by this Friday\, October 19! \nPresenter: \nREINHARD SCHUETZ – P. Eng\, UV-DOX EnviroTek \n45 years of commitment by Reinhard Schuetz\, P. Eng.\, to Petroleum Industry engineering\, as well as passion for a cleaner environment\, culminated in the establishment of ‘UV-DOX EnviroTek’ and development of the UV-DOX Reactor (a pollution control device suitable for residential\, commercial\, industrial and agricultural installations to simultaneously combat germicidal and chemical contaminants). \nPrior involvements entailed being a Partner in a consulting engineering company\, a Director with the Alberta Biodiesel Association\, a Nominee for Entrepreneur of the Year and Founder of a tank fabrication company responsible for Dual-containment Heated Storage Tank and Condensing Unit design and patents. \nAbstract: \nThe presentation will address a newly developed multi-pass Environmental Protection Device (the UV-DOX Reactor) dealing with contamination reduction at the source.  Capable of simultaneously mitigating germicidal and chemical contamination\, the Reactor is suitable for residential\, commercial\, industrial and agricultural installations. \nToxic chemical emissions and germ-laden air circulation systems are common instigators of detrimental health and environmental issues.  Annual premature human deaths due to air pollution have been estimated at 7\,700 in Canada\, 200\,000 in the USA and a staggering 7 million globally. \nUVC light has a proven history of pungent air and germicidal reduction.  In addition to achieving superior odour and harmful organism destruction\, the UV-DOX Reactor (combining UVC light\, photo-catalytic coating and unique baffle system) is also capable of breaking chemical bonds of various VOC’s\, thereby effectively diminishing pollutants. For example\, lab tests achieved 99.9% destruction of lethal Sulfur Dioxide\, 99.0% toxic Ammonia\, 98.5% deadly Hydrogen Sulfide\, 97.9% carcinogenic Benzene and 96.4% dangerous Nitrogen Oxides. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, October 19 for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. Register for this event with Paypal online registration and payment (there is an option for using a credit card\, no Paypal account is required). \nCPANS member cost is $35\nNon-member cost is $45 \nYou can also register by emailing CalgaryLuncheon@cpans.org and then we accept payment upon arrival to the luncheon\, by cash or cheque only. SUMMARY:Calgary April Luncheon: U.S. Climate Liability Lawsuits Against Oil Companies: An Attempt to Bring Science to the Table
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, April 18\, 2018. Please register by this Friday\, April 13! \nPresenter: \nChristian Reuten\, Ph.D.\, ACM\, Technical Director / Associate\, RWDI AIR Inc.\n \nChristian’s technical work at RWDI includes climate-change assessments\, data analysis\, and numerical modelling and model evaluation.  He oversees RWDI’s Greenhouse Gas Verification Program and a broad client sector including government\, Indigenous people\, lawyers\, and academia.  Christian is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary.  His research interests comprise climate downscaling and the impact of regional climate change on glaciers\, air quality\, and tropical cyclones.  Christian was a reviewer of two IPCC Assessment Reports.  He is a CMOS Accredited Consultant in Meteorology and received a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of British Columbia. \nAbstract: \nLegal scrutiny of oil companies is growing in the United States.  By now\, at least nine U.S. cities have filed law suits against oil companies over climate change;  to-date\, none has succeeded.  On March 21\, Judge William Alsup\, presiding over two lawsuits by San Francisco and Oakland\, took an unprecedented approach:  Trying to establish a common understanding of the facts\, he had asked both sides to prepare a two-hour tutorial\, each\, to answer eight questions on climate science.  In this presentation\, I will walk you through those eight questions and provide the best available scientific answer – in less than an hour\, because I will not indulge in legal appeals. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, April 13 for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. Register for this event with Paypal online registration and payment (there is an option for using a credit card\, no Paypal account is required). \nCPANS member cost is $35\nNon-member cost is $45 \nYou can also register by emailing CalgaryLuncheon@cpans.org and then we accept payment upon arrival to the luncheon by debit\, credit card\, cash or cheque. SUMMARY:Calgary December Luncheon: Bridging the Gap: Using a Quality of Life Approach to Integrate our Understanding of Health\, Social\, Environmental and Economic Impacts in the Oil Sands
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, December 13\, 2017. Please register by end of Friday\, December 8th! \nPresenters: \nDebra Hopkins\, Environmental Health Team Lead\, Policy and Planning Division\, Alberta Environment and Parks \nDebra Hopkins is the Environmental Health Team Lead at Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) and has been working in the field of environmental public health for over 17 years. Since joining AEP\, she has been a strong advocate for the integration of human well-being\, cultural diversity and the social determinants of health into government policy and land use planning initiatives that support cumulative effects management. Currently her work includes applying natural and social scientific methodologies to evaluate potential impacts to human well-being. She is passionate about building community-based research approaches that respectfully reflect Indigenous and western knowledge systems. She has worked for Alberta Health\, Health Canada and started her path into the world of environmental health as a consultant with Intrinsic Environmental Sciences (formally Cantox Environmental) in Calgary. \nKaitlyn Wall\, Environmental Health Risk Assessment Modeller\, Policy and Planning Division\, Alberta Environment and Parks \nKaitlyn Wall has been with Alberta Environment and Parks for 4 years as an Environmental Health Risk Assessment Modeller. During her time with government she has had the opportunity to work on health risk assessments\, risk assessment modelling and spatial analysis\, health impact assessments\, quality of life assessments\, community based environmental health projects\, and health-based regulatory guideline development. \nTopic:\n \nBridging the Gap: Using a Quality of Life Approach to Integrate our Understanding of Health\, Social\, Environmental and Economic Impacts in the Oil Sands \nFor land use planning purposes\, a Quality of Life (QOL) approach was developed by the Alberta Government\, as part of a Regional Strategic Assessment\, to characterize human well-being in the face of existing and future oil sands development in the south Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta. This innovative approach delivered practical solutions using natural and social science methods to evaluate potential impacts to QOL\, with a focus on understanding health (e.g.\, well-being\, health risk) and its connection to our environment (air\, water\, biodiversity and land). The use of this approach as an integrative tool to describe the linkages between economic\, social and environmental influences represented a novel way of informing oil sands development planning and policy. Discussion of the QOL findings will show how new perspectives can be gained from the application of this approach on community level and regional scales\, integrating both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples’ perspectives. \n  \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, December 8th for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. SUMMARY:Calgary November Luncheon: A True NO2 Solution - A Verified NO2 to NO Converter for Existing NOx Instruments
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, November 22\, 2017. Please register by end of Friday\, November 17th! \nPresenter: Charles A. Odame-Ankrah\, Senior Product Development Specialist\, Global Analyzer Systems Ltd. \nDr. Charles Odame-Ankrah is an analytical chemist with a specialization in air monitoring instrument development using cutting edge technology and has experience in ambient air pollution issues relating to nitrogen oxides and ozone. He has invented a new device for NO2 conversion that is currently being evaluated by a host of Government and research institutions around the world for true NO2 measurement\, and has successfully developed a Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer (CRDS) for real time monitoring of nitrogen oxides during his PhD. He is currently a Senior Product Development Specialist at Global Analyzer Systems with expertise in the ambient Air Quality.  He has more than 5 years of experience working in the research area of air emission monitoring. Due to Charles’s expertise\, he has worked closely with Provincial and Federal regulatory bodies such the Alberta Government\, Metro Vancouver and Environment Canada during fields campaigns in the Lower Frazer Valley and The Alberta Oil Sands respectively. He holds a First Class Honors Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast\, a Master’s degree from East Tennessee State University\, USA\, and has recently earned his PhD from the University of Calgary. \nTopic: A True NO2 Solution – A Verified NO2 to NO Converter for Existing NOx Instruments \nMonitoring of criteria pollutants is crucial for meeting the air quality standards set by regulatory bodies around the world. The most common way of monitoring NOx (NO\, nitric oxide + NO2\, nitrogen dioxide)\, is using commercial analyzers employing the NO-ozone chemiluminescence technique which detects only NO. To detect the total NOx\, the analyzer must go through two steps in its detection phase. In Step 1\, the analyzer detects only the NO in the sampled air mass. In Step 2\, the analyzer routes the sampled air mass first through a heated metal converter to breakdown NO2 to NO\, and together with the NO detected in Step 1\, is detected as the total NOx in the sampled air mass. The difference in concentration between Step 2 and Step 1 is the indirectly determined level of NO2 in the sampled air mass. Studies have been performed around the world to compare analyzers which use heated metal converters and analyzers that either (a) directly measure NO2\, or (b) use alternative NO2-NO conversion techniques. These studies have confirmed consistent overestimation of NO2 by the former instruments that use heated metal converters in situations where other nitrogen oxides are present. A new converter\, using photolysis to selectively breakdown NO2 to NO in the sampled air\, can allow the analyzer to detect only the NO resulting from the breakdown of the NO2\, ensuring the total NOx and NO2 concentrations are accurately presented. The converter has been successfully demonstrated through laboratory and field work\, and the results show greater than 96% NO2 conversion efficiency. Three commercially available analyzers have been tested with this converter at the prevailing reaction/detection cell/chamber pressures of these analyzers. The converter operates under the same flow conditions of these analyzers\, and has proven to not interfere with the manufacturer’s specifications and operating conditions of these analyzers. Results and comparison data from field studies and laboratory tests are presented to show how this novel converter can potentially revolutionize indirect NO2 detection by the chemiluminescence method. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, November 17th for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. SUMMARY:Calgary September Luncheon: Alberta’s Climate Change Leadership Plan – Impacts on Energy Producers and Consumers
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, September 27\, 2017. Please register by end of Friday\, September 22nd! \nPresenters: Dana Saric and Lorne Carson \nDana Saric\, Associate\, Corporate\, Osler\, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP \nDana’s practice focuses on project development and finance and on corporate lending in oil and gas production\, renewable energy\, transportation\, electrical power and infrastructure sectors. She has experience with the power and renewable sectors in power purchase agreements\, carbon credit transactions and swaps\, as well as experience with energy project development\, mergers\, acquisitions\, joint venture arrangements\, construction\, hedging arrangements\, syndicated and non-syndicated bank loan transactions and public and private debt offerings in the capital markets. \nLorne Carson\, Partner\, Corporate\, Osler\, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP \nLorne is a partner in the firm’s Corporate Practice Group based in the Calgary office. Lorne is also a professional engineer. His practice focuses on project development and finance in the oil and gas\, pipeline\, petro-chemical\, electrical power\, renewable and infrastructure sectors. Lorne has extensive experience in the power and renewable sectors including power purchase agreements\, renewable energy credit sales\, swaps and forward sales. \nTopic: Alberta’s Climate Change Leadership Plan – Impacts on Energy Producers and Consumers \nEager to improve its public image in the midst of ongoing pipeline and oil sands project controversy\, Alberta’s new government tightened its pre-existing carbon emissions regulation and introduced the Climate Change Leadership Plan. The province’s new\, comprehensive carbon emissions strategy is far-reaching\, tolling the death knell for coal-fired generation\, imposing multi-layered new costs and restrictions on oil sands production\, and paving the way for a restructured power market which incentivizes renewable power production for the first time in the province’s history. Against this backdrop\, on December 9\, 2016\, the federal government  announced the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. Although light on tangible policy measures\, the federal plan unmistakably signals that escalating carbon pricing across the economy is a reality which is here to stay. \nThe focus of this presentation will be to evaluate the climate change legislation in force in Alberta and its impacts on energy producers and consumers\, from oil and gas producers who must comply with multi-layered restrictions in the new carbon regime\, to renewable energy producers and other participants and purchasers in the power market who can benefit from new policy measures\, new financial incentives and new electricity market structures. The presenters will examine the practical impacts of the emerging carbon regime for energy producers and consumers. While the end result of Canada’s multi-layered and continually evolving legislative carbon framework is currently unknown\, one thing is clear – industrial carbon emitters and renewable power generators alike would be wise to manage the impact of their carbon footprints and to seek opportunities within the network of emerging climate change policies and emissions markets. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, September 22nd for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches. SUMMARY:Source Apportionment of Secondary Fine Particulate Matter in Central Alberta Using CMAQ
DESCRIPTION:CPANS is pleased to announce the September Edmonton Luncheon Topic: Source Apportionment of Secondary Fine Particulate Matter in Central Alberta Using CMAQ \nIn 2016\, Alberta Environment and Parks awarded the Parkland Airshed Management Zone with a grant to perform source apportionment modelling of secondary fine particulate matter in central Alberta; contractor Ramboll Environ was retained. Building on their previous secondary fine particulate matter modelling in the Alberta Capital Region\, Ramboll Environ expanded the scope of the modelling to encompass central Alberta. Six source apportionment scenarios were identified based on common emission sources in central Alberta: on-road mobile sources\, upstream oil and gas\, coal-fired electrical generating units\, other electrical generating units\, other stationary point sources\, and all anthropogenic sources. Results of the source apportionment scenarios will be presented along with information regarding model performance and recommendations for future work. \nPresenter: Maxwell Mazur joined Alberta Environment and Parks in 2014. He is the is the Senior Air Quality Specialist for the Red Deer North Saskatchewan region. In his time with the department he has contributed to the understanding and management of fine particulate matter in the region through the Capital Region and Red Deer fine particulate matter responses. This work combines Maxwell’s experience in air quality research (e.g. M.Sc. University of Toronto\, Publications with Environment Canada) and interaction with stakeholders to implement and achieve effective air quality management in Alberta. \nLocation: The University of Alberta Faculty Club (11435\, Saskatchewan Drive)\, Papaschase Room (upstairs\, right)\nTime: 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. (registration starts at 11:30)\nCost: $35 – A&WMA Members / $45 – Non-Members / $15 – Students (includes hot lunch & coffee). SUMMARY:Calgary March Luncheon - A Regulatory-Approved Regional Approach to Noise Management in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland
DESCRIPTION:The next CPANS Calgary Technical Luncheon presentation is Wednesday\, March 22nd. Please register by end of Friday\, March 17th! \nPresenters: Laurie J. Danielson\, B.Sc.\, M.Sc.\, Ph.D.\, P.Chem.\, Executive Director of Northeast Capital Industrial Association and Chris Bibby\, M.A.Sc.\, P.Eng.\, Intermediate Engineer at SLR Consulting. \nDr. Danielson joined the NCIA in 2007 following a lengthy career with Sherritt Inc.\, Viridian Inc. and The Westaim Corporation. Dr. Danielson holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Alberta\, and has extensive experience in regulatory compliance\, government relations\, and regional issues management. A longtime resident of Fort Saskatchewan\, he is a member of the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta\, a board member of the Fort Air Partnership\, a board member of the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance\, and is a recipient of the 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal for community involvement. \nMr. Bibby\, P.Eng.\, M.A.Sc.\, has a Master of Applied Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, Acoustics and Noise Research Group. He has been working as an acoustical consultant to industrial clients since completing his work at UBC in 2012. His professional experience has focused on environmental and occupational noise and vibration impact assessments\, engineering noise control design. This experience incorporates extensive field measurements\, equipment noise emission analysis\, modeling of noise propagation\, noise control design\, and reporting. Mr. Bibby has published eight peer-reviewed scientific papers and presented papers at four national and international conferences. Mr. Bibby has also provided expert testimony at the Provincial Court of Alberta\, and appeared as a technical expert at a Rocky View County Public Hearing in relation to land use redesignation and industrial development applications. \nTopic: A Regulatory-Approved Regional Approach to Noise Management in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland \nThe NCIA is an industrial association that represents approximately 25 industrial partners near Fort Saskatchewan\, Alberta\, with current industrial investment of over $32B. The complex cumulative noise environment\, combined with the industrial nature of the area\, presents significant challenges for permitting and compliance as local noise regulations are based on cumulative impacts at residential receptors. To address these challenges\, the NCIA developed a Regional Noise Management Plan (RNMP) in collaboration with local regulators. The RNMP relies heavily on industry best practices for noise management and control\, and does not employ maximum permissible noise levels. Each NCIA member site develops a site noise management plan\, including; maintaining a site noise model\, following noise control best practices for existing and future equipment\, and annual reporting. The NCIA maintains a Regional Noise Model (RNM)\, conducts annual noise monitoring at several locations in the region\, and reports to the regulatory authorities. The RNM is a compilation of all site noise models. Prediction results are used to: identify receptor noise levels; identify the impact of noise control projects\, proposed facilities\, and new facilities; and generate publicly available Google Earth noise contour files. The annual noise monitoring program validates and identifies inconsistencies in the RNM. \nRegistration and payment:\nPlease register by end of Friday\, March 17th for the event\, so that we can order the correct number of lunches.
