DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to our next CPANS Edmonton luncheon\, which will feature two exciting topics. \nAbout the presentations: \nTopic 1: Smoke formation dynamics observed from near-field wildland fire sensor deployment in prescribed burning \nThis talk will present results from sensor deployment near fire-front in a prescribed wildfire in Alberta. The research was conducted through collaboration of Alberta Forestry\, Environment and Protected Areas\, Canadian Forest Services\, and University of Alberta. A network of five low-footprint portable sensors were deployed at downwind locations within 500-1000 meters from active fire. Sharp increase of fire-generated pollutants including particulate matters (PM) were observed within few minutes of fire ignition. Rise of PM2.5 concentration from ambient level to an order of 1000 µg/cm3 along the direction of plume propagation were recorded. Strong spatial variability of plume pattern was observed with two of the five sensors located in the close vicinity not observing apparent changes in air parameters. Sequence of smoke formation through flaming and smoldering phases of fire were identified through the characteristics of plume and propagation. Prospects of low-footprint sensors in wildfire monitoring will be discussed. \nTopic 2: Automation of haul truck fleet in Alberta mining and the environmental benefits \nThere are interests in global mining industries towards automating the operations of extraction\, processing\, and transport. An anticipated cost reduction of $1 per barrel is expected from automation in Alberta oilsands mining. This seminar will present recent research initiatives taken by the Centre for Sensors and System Integration at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in automating the inspection process of an autonomous mining haul truck fleet. Technology overview on sensor\, camera\, and robotic integration towards an automated system for inspection and data-driven decision making through ML and AI based predictive analytics will be provided. Outcome of automation in reducing emission of pollutants and greenhouse gases will be discussed. Alignment of technology innovation\, automation\, and digitization with economic and environmental benefits will be highlighted. \nAbout the Presenters: \nQuamrul Huda\, Ph.D.\, P.Eng. \nQuamrul Huda is presently working as the JR Shaw Research Chair in Industrial Automation at the Centre for Sensors and System Integration in Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering under the Commonwealth Scholarship award in U.K. and had his post-doctoral research under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship award. Quamrul has research accomplishments in electronic materials\, nano devices\, semiconductor processing\, microelectromechanical systems\, optoelectronics\, and laser spectroscopy. He was a recipient of the Government of Alberta’s Innovation Fund Award for leading the development of IoT-based low-footprint air monitoring systems. SUMMARY:Characterization of GHG Fugitive Emissions from an Oil Sands Tailings Pond in Northern Alberta: Results from an Initial Assessment
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to our next CPANS Edmonton luncheon on an Albertan mine GHG emission characterization study. The study used flux chambers to quantify emission rates and provided insight to temporal variation. \nPresenter: Lucas Zhang \nAbout the presentation: \nThe oil sands tailings ponds are a significant source of GHG emissions in Alberta. Typical GHG emission measurements over oil sands tailings pond use flux chambers and take a single measurement of 30 to 90 minutes that may not account for temporal variability of emissions. An autonomous mobile platform was deployed at a tailings pond near an active mine site in Northern Alberta for a 5-day GHG emission characterization study in the fall of 2016. GHG emissions were sampled and measured with a flux chamber and a CO2/CH4 analyzer on board. The combination of two solar panels and two heavy-duty lead-acid batteries provided enough power for up to 13 hours of operation. The autonomous mobile platform collected 111 CO2 emission data points over 5 days at three different locations of the tailings pond during this study. The individual CO2 flux rates ranged from 0.22 – 1.15 µmol/(m2-sec) with daily average CO2 flux rates ranged from 0.45 to 0.72 µmol/(m2-sec). The daytime and nighttime flux rates measured at all three locations showed no significant differences. The CH4 emissions followed a different pattern compared to that of CO2 as peaks of CH4 concentration above background were recorded under both open- and closed- statuses of the flux chamber. The CH4 signals collected under the chamber-closed status were not representative of the true CH4 emissions. This was likely due to the spatial irregularity of the CH4 emission at the three sampling sites and the small cross-section area of the flux chamber on board the platform. The study provided insight into the temporal variation of GHG emissions from the tailings pond and demonstrated the potential of the autonomous mobile platform for measuring emissions on tailings ponds. \nAbout the Presenters: \nLucas Zhang\nLucas Zhang is the Director of the Conventional Oil and Gas Aggregate Program under the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) Regulation. He started working for the Government of Alberta in 2016 and has focused on quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and ambient air monitoring in the oil sands region\, and more recently\, implementing the TIER Regulation with respect to the conventional oil and gas sector. He holds degrees in Environmental Engineering and brings expertise in data analysis\, computer programming\, process automation\, regulatory implementation\, and stakeholder engagement. The course will consist of technical lectures with relevant examples. Topics include air quality issues\, fundamentals of meteorology\, air quality model types and selection\, and emission estimates. There will be no hands-on training. For a detailed course outline\, click here. \nAt the end of the course\, attendees will: \n\n have a better understanding of the key meteorological processes that impact air quality;\n be able to select the appropriate model(s) to address specific air quality issues; and\n be able to assess necessary input data and critically review air quality modelling studies.\n\nSpeaker Bio \nDr. Piotr Staniaszek has more than 30 years of experience in air quality consulting including more than 27 years as an air dispersion modeller. He has managed and executed numerous dispersion modeling projects throughout whole Canada including Alberta\, BC\, Saskatchewan\, and Manitoba. He has organized and co-instructed several CALPUFF/CALMET introductory and advanced courses. Dr. Staniaszek has been a Sessional Instructor at the University of Calgary for many years.  Dr. Staniaszek has experience developing emissions inventories\, models and preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for the oil sands\, sand\, gravel quarries\, coal\, potash\, gold\, diamond\, and mineral mines\, and petrochemical industries. He has written numerous air quality management plans including flaring and dust management plans. This event promises to provide valuable information on air quality management and the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in the region. \nPresenters: Danlin Su\, and David Spink \nAbout the presentation: \nSurface oil sands mining operations in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) are major contributors to particulate matter (PM) emissions. In addition to fine PM\, predominantly emitted by stationary combustion sources and mine fleet\, coarse PM (i.e.\, fugitive dust) and its associated nuisance and potential health impacts are a concern for Indigenous communities. This presentation will cover PM2.5/PM10 ratio profiles determined using ambient data collected at various air monitoring stations across the AOSR. It will also analyze the factors influencing PM2.5/PM10 ratios observed in different communities. \nAbout the Presenters: \nDanlin Su is an environmental engineer and independent consultant. She has worked in various civil and environmental engineering roles in both the public and private sectors. SUMMARY:Connecting the Chemical Composition of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) with Its Oxidative Potential: The Role of Redox-active Components
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Haoran Yu\, University of Alberta \n  \nAbout the presentation: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) significantly impacts health\, and the expression of oxidative stress has been proposed and demonstrated as a significant biological pathway of the health effects of PM2.5. Oxidative potential (OP) serves as an important indicator for representing the expression of oxidative stress and in assessing the health implications of PM2.5 exposure\, which has been demonstrated to be associated more directly with health outcomes than mass concentration alone. \n  \nOur investigation focuses on the patterns and roles of the redox-active components of PM2.5 in determining OP. In our first study\, we employed a dithiothreitol (DTT) assay to study the interactions among PM components\, including organic species (e.g.\, quinones and ambient humic-like substances\, HULIS) and transition metals (e.g.\, Fe\, Mn\, and Cu) known to exhibit substantial OP. This approach highlighted the presence of ubiquitous interactions and revealed that the intensity of these interactions varies between DTT depletion and hydroxyl radical generation. Next\, we explored the molecular characterization and OP of HULIS in PM2.5 through sequential extraction and analysis of three ambient PM2.5 samples. The extraction process aimed to separate components based on hydrophilicity and polarity\, with analysis revealing a correlation between the chemical composition of more polar extracts and DTT activity. This indicates the significant role of polar redox-active chemicals in determining OP. \n  \nFinally\, we investigated the chemical composition of PM2.5 collected from five distinct locations at urban\, roadside and rural environments in Midwestern region of the United States\, and associated them with five acellular oxidative potential (OP) endpoints of water-soluble PM2.5. We observed significant correlations of redox-active metals (i.e.\, Cu\, Fe\, and Mn) and carbonaceous species across most OP endpoints\, further supporting their dominant contribution to OP. Our source apportionment analysis using the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model across different environments in the Midwestern US also emphasized the discrepancy between sources contributing to PM2.5 mass and those affecting its OP. While regional secondary sources and combustion-related aerosols were major contributors to PM2.5 mass\, local sources with marginal contribution to mass played a more significant role in influencing various OP endpoints. \n  \nThis comprehensive study underscores the complex nature of health effects of PM2.5 linked to its chemical composition rather than bulk mass\, highlighting the importance of considering more health-relevant indicators in air quality management strategies. Future work will delve deeper into the roles of specific organic species and leverage machine learning to predict OP of PM2.5 based on its chemical composition and source contributions\, thereby enhancing our understanding of the health implications of ambient pollutants. \n  \nPresenter Bio: Dr. Haoran Yu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta\, where he has been a faculty member since January 2024. He earned his undergraduate degree in Applied Chemistry from South China University of Technology in 2013. Pursuing further education in the United States\, he obtained his M.S. in Environmental Engineering and Sciences from the University of Florida in 2016\, followed by a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022\, where he worked under the guidance of Vishal Verma. After completing his Ph.D.\, he joined the University of California Davis as a postdoctoral researcher until July 2023\, collaborating with Dr. Anthony Wexler. \n  \nDr. Yu’s research interest lies in understanding the health effects of atmospheric pollutants. His work aims to improve public awareness of the hazardous effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) by developing and investigating a more robust and simple health-relevant metric of PM. Currently\, he leads projects on the development of a system for automated oxidative potential (OP) measurement\, investigating the various roles of ambient particulate organic species in OP\, and developing a machine learning model to elucidate the connections between the composition and sources of PM2.5 and their OP expressions. \n  \nCost: $40 – A&WMA Members / $50 – Non-Members / $15 –Students (includes hot lunch & coffee). Among these gases\, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) holds pivotal importance for several reasons. NO2 isn’t just a trace gas; it’s a lethal toxin affecting human health and ecological balance. Monitoring its levels is crucial for public safety and environmental stability. Additionally\, NO2 significantly impacts air quality and contributes to the formation of hazardous substances like ozone\, along with acid precipitation. \n  \nGlobal has been working on new innovations designed to bring certainty to NO2 measurement: \n\nFor the past two years we have been fortunate to work with the Fort Air Partnership on a co-locate application\,  collecting continuous field data for our Photolytic Converter (PhoNO). Unlike traditional heated metal converters \, the PhoNO exclusively converts NO2\, ensuring accurate reporting without biases and can be used for a variety of applications\, from ambient or roadside monitoring to scientific research.\nIn 2023\, Global began co-located studies with our patented dual channel NO2\, NOx\, NO analyzer with NOAA and the USEPA. SUMMARY:CLEAN AIR STRATEGIC ALLIANCE (CASA) VEHICLE EMISSIONS TESTING PROJECT IN ALBERTA: SUMMARY OF RESULTS FROM DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSES
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation: The Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) was established in March 1994. It is a collaborative partnership composed of representatives selected by industry\, government\, Indigenous\, and non-government organizations. Every partner is committed to a comprehensive air quality management system for Alberta. \nCASA began the third iteration of its ROVER (Roadside Optical Vehicle Emissions Reporter) project in 2018. The goal of the CASA ROVER III project is to measure emissions from the in-use on-road transportation sector\, particularly diesel-fuelled trucks\, to inform management actions and/or next steps for transportation emissions management in Alberta. The vehicle emissions testing contractor\, Opus Inspection Inc.\, used remote sensing to measure tailpipe emissions from vehicles in Fort McMurray\, Grande Prairie\, Edmonton\, Red Deer\, and Calgary\, as well as at six Vehicle Inspection Stations across the province. Opus then paired the emissions data with vehicle characteristic information to perform the analyses. The CASA ROVER III project team is currently using the results to help inform potential recommendations for transportation emissions management. The CASA ROVER III project is expected to be complete in April 2024. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of the project and summarize the data collection methods and analysis results. More detailed information on the project and the work completed to date is available on CASA’s website. \n  \nPresenter: Andre Asselin\, Clean Air Strategic Alliance \nAndre Asselin has been the executive director of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance and the Alberta Water Council since 2017. He is born and raised in Edmonton\, Alberta and developed a passion for collaborative decision making in managing Alberta’s natural resources early in his career. He is well versed with several air quality models including AERMOD\, CALPUFF and CMAQ and have done training courses on these models. Dr. Shareef possesses exceptional skills in teaching and mentoring and has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses and other short courses. He has organized many workshops and awareness sessions. \nDr Piotr Staniaszek has more than 27 years of experience in air quality consulting including more than 24 years as an air dispersion modeller. He has managed and executed numerous dispersion modeling projects throughout whole Canada including Alberta\, BC\, Saskatchewan\, and Manitoba. He has done modelling for two potash mining projects in Saskatchewan. He has organized and co-instructed several CALPUFF/CALMET introductory and advanced courses. Dr. Staniaszek was also co-instructor in a two-day training course entitled Guidance on Review of Air Quality Environmental Assessment Reports and one day Introductory Dispersion Modelling Course in Alberta. Dr. Staniaszek has been a Sessional Instructor at the University of Calgary for many years. While ambient measurements give an indication of how serious air pollution problems are\, but air quality models provide a detailed spatio-temporal pollutant concentration as well as allows testing different strategies for controlling air pollution. The issue of air pollution is complex due to the influence of medium and long-range transport of air pollutants and the need for mitigating secondary pollutants. The most effective way of testing control strategies in such situations is through regional photochemical air quality modelling. This presentation will cover basics of photochemical air quality modelling and the introduction to the tools SMOKE and CMAQ which are generally used for this purpose. \nPresenter: \nMujtaba Shareef is a senior air quality scientist at Alberta Energy Regulator and a sessional instructor at University of Calgary. He has over two decades of experience in the areas of air quality modelling\, ambient monitoring\, environmental impact assessments\, relevant policies\, and guidelines.
