SUMMARY:Calgary October 2026 Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nMethane sensing from space: tracking methane from oil & gas fields to cities \n\nSpeaker:  \nDr. Zhenyu Xing\, \nAtmospheric and environmental scientist at the Smart Emissions Sensing Technologies (SENST) Lab at the University of Calgary \nUniversity of Calgary \n  \nAbout the Speaker:  \nDr. Zhenyu Xing is an atmospheric and environmental scientist at the Smart Emissions Sensing Technologies (SENST) Lab at the University of Calgary\, specializing in air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. His research integrates satellite remote sensing\, atmospheric observations\, and data-driven approaches to quantify and identify emission sources. His recent work focuses on satellite-based methane monitoring\, including urban methane source attribution\, emission estimates from the oil and gas sector\, and tracking long-term changes in industrial emissions. Dr. Xing’s broader research interests include air quality monitoring\, aerosol source attribution\, satellite remote sensing\, greenhouse gas monitoring\, and emission modelling. \n  \nAbout the Presentation:  \nDr. Zhenyu Xing will introduce how spaceborne observations are being used to detect\, monitor\, and quantify atmospheric methane emissions. The talk will provide an accessible overview of satellite-based methane monitoring\, followed by examples of how these observations can be used to track methane emissions from the oil and gas industry and identify the urban methane hotspots. Drawing on recent research\, the presentation will highlight both the opportunities and challenges of using satellite observations to better understand where methane emissions come from\, how they change over time\, and how satellite data can support more accurate emission accountings and more effective emission reduction efforts. \n  \nDate: \nWednesday\, October 21\, 2026 \n\nTime: \n11:30 AM – 1:00 PM \nLunches will be served at 11:30am and the presentation starts at 12:00noon \n  \nVenue: \nClassroom 1\, Platform \n407 9 Ave SE\, Calgary\, AB T2G 2K7 \n\n Cost: \n$40 – A&WMA Members \n$50 – Non-Members \n$15 – Students (includes hot lunch & coffee; GST included) \nWebinar Access: Individual ($20) | Group ($80) \n\nDetails: \nFor Online attendance: registration is open till the last minute; \nFor in-person attendance: please register by Monday\, October 19 to secure your spot\, food restrictions if any and help us plan for lunch.
