Abstract:
Ethylene Oxide, a chemical intermediate used in the manufacturing of industrial chemicals (ethylene glycol) and a common medical disinfectant, is emitted from various industries all over the nation. The categorization of the level of toxicity associated with ethylene oxide has been the subject of recent review from both the EPA and individual state governments due to its latest reclassification to a known human carcinogen. In this presentation, we will be discussing the potential and recent rulings regarding this chemical in the US and Canada, its associated health effects, issues caused by this pollutant, as well as the future of permitting ethylene oxide in Texas and Canada.
Presenter:
Rawan El-Afifi is an environmental engineer working in the air quality group in Houston, Texas. Rawan holds a MSc degree in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Tech, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. She has been with AECOM for 2 years, and her experience includes air quality permitting and air dispersion modeling. Rawan also has international experience, having worked in Abu Dhabi for 3 years on issues relating to energy and environment.
